Mini Paceman engine knocking combustion issue
Summary of the thread
A 2013 Mini Paceman is experiencing engine knocking, reduced power, jerking during acceleration, and visible smoke, with an error stored in the memory. The initial assessment points to deposits in the combustion chamber as the likely cause. Suggestions include checking the knock sensor and considering ignition timing or engine tuning issues. Ultimately, a workshop confirmed the diagnosis of combustion chamber deposits, and cleaning resolved the issue.

Thank you for your input. Did you also experience smoke during acceleration? And if so, did replacing the knock sensor resolve the issue for you, or was further intervention required?

Yes, the smoke was present in my case as well. Replacing the knock sensor did not solve the problem. It turned out to be excessive carbon buildup in the combustion chamber. If you are experiencing similar symptoms, I would recommend consulting a workshop for a thorough inspection and cleaning. Ignoring it can lead to more serious engine damage.

I appreciate you sharing your experience. The workshop confirmed the diagnosis: deposits in the combustion chamber. They performed a cleaning and the engine now runs smoothly. Total cost: 425€.

I encountered a similar issue with my Mini Paceman. Reduced engine power and jerking during acceleration sound familiar. Have you checked the knock sensor? Sometimes, a faulty sensor can trigger similar symptoms, even if the root cause lies elsewhere. It is a bit like a faulty smoke detector that goes off even though there is no fire.
