Mini Paceman Engine Troubles

Alright, I'm officially pulling my hair out! My 2016 Mini Paceman is giving me fits. The engine is running unevenly, the check engine light is on, and I'm getting a noticeable jerking when accelerating. Error codes are popping up, pointing to a possible engine misfire. I've already checked the spark plugs and ignition coils, but no luck. Could this be related to the timing belt or maybe something more serious like a leak in the exhaust system?

Summary of the thread

A 2016 Mini Paceman was experiencing engine troubles, including uneven running, a check engine light, and jerking during acceleration, with error codes indicating a possible engine misfire. Initial checks of the spark plugs and ignition coils did not resolve the issue. Suggestions included examining the oxygen sensor, fuel pump, and crankshaft sensor. Ultimately, a leak in the exhaust system was identified as the cause, and repairing it resolved the problem.

Did this summary help you solve your problem?

Sounds familiar. I had a similar issue with my Paceman. Check engine light, jerking, the whole shebang. Did you check the oxygen sensor? I had to replace mine. Also, have you ruled out any issues with the fuel pump? Sometimes a failing fuel pump can cause similar symptoms.

Thanks for the quick reply! The oxygen sensor seems fine, according to the diagnostic tool. But the fuel pump is a good point. How did you diagnose yours? Was it throwing any specific codes, or did you just replace it as a precaution? Also, could a faulty crankshaft sensor cause similar problems?

Yeah, the diagnostic tool didn't give me a clear fuel pump code either, but the mechanic suspected it based on the other symptoms. Crankshaft sensor could also be a culprit, but in my case, it was definitely the oxygen sensor and a small exhaust leak causing the misfire. If you've checked the obvious stuff, I'd suggest getting it to a workshop to check for exhaust leaks with a smoke test before replacing more parts at random. They can also check fuel pressure which could indicate a failing pump.

Just wanted to give you an update. Dropped the Paceman at the shop, and you were spot on! Turned out to be a leak in the exhaust system, causing the engine to run unevenly. They replaced the faulty part, and now it's running smoothly again. Cost me 265€, but at least it's fixed. Thanks a bunch for your help!
