Mini Paceman issues

My 2014 Mini Paceman gasoline is giving me grief. I'm experiencing increased fuel consumption, the engine stalls at idle, the check engine light is on, and there's smoke when accelerating. I suspect the mass air flow meter LMM is defective. Does this sound right?

Sounds like a classic MAF sensor issue. I had similar symptoms on my old Saab – higher fuel consumption, rough idle, check engine light, the whole shebang. The MAF sensor is basically the engine's nose, and if it's not working right, the engine doesn't know how much air it's breathing. First, check your air filter; a dirty air filter can sometimes cause the MAF sensor to get dirty and malfunction. Did you check for any obvious damage to the sensor itself or the wiring?

The air filter looks clean, I changed it about 5000 km ago. I visually inspected the MAF sensor, and didn't notice anything obvious, no broken wires or anything. When your Saab had this problem, did you try cleaning the MAF sensor or did you just replace it outright?

I tried cleaning the MAF sensor on the Saab, but it was a temporary fix at best. Think of it like trying to fix a cracked windshield with tape - it might hold for a bit, but the problem's still there. Given your symptoms, especially the stalling and smoke, and since you've checked the air filter, I'd lean towards sensor failure. Best to get it properly diagnosed at a workshop to be 100% sure, but a new MAF sensor is likely the solution.

Took the Paceman to the workshop. You were spot on, MAF sensor failure. New sensor fitted and the car's running perfectly again. Cost me 365€ all in. Thanks for the help!
