Mini Paceman Transmission Issues
Summary of the thread
A 2015 Mini Paceman diesel model is experiencing transmission issues, indicated by the check engine and transmission lights, gearbox slipping, and grinding noises. The problem is suspected to be a defective automatic transmission converter, specifically the lock-up clutch. Error codes confirm the torque converter lock-up clutch issue, suggesting a converter failure. The recommended solution is to have the vehicle professionally diagnosed and repaired, which ultimately resolved the problem after replacing the converter.

I appreciate the quick reply. I did check the transmission fluid, and it seemed to be at the correct level, although I'm not sure how to properly assess its condition. As for the error codes, I noted them down but did not include them in my initial post. One code specifically mentioned an issue with the torque converter lock-up clutch. Does this further confirm the converter failure?

Yes, the error code mentioning the torque converter lock-up clutch definitely points towards a converter failure. Considering the symptoms and the error code, it would be best to take your Mini Paceman to a reputable workshop for a professional diagnosis and transmission repair. Continuing to drive it in this condition could cause further damage.

Thank you for confirming my suspicions and for the advice. I took my Mini Paceman to a workshop. The diagnosis confirmed the torque converter fault. The transmission repair, including replacement of the converter, ended up costing 2120€. It seems to have resolved the engine surge and shifting issues. Hopefully, this is the end of it.

That does sound like a converter fault. The lock-up clutch failing would certainly explain the engine surge and transmission slipping. Have you checked the transmission fluid level and condition? Low or burnt fluid can sometimes cause similar symptoms. Also, did the error memory provide any specific fault codes?
