Mini Roadster check engine light and fuel consumption
Summary of the thread
A 2012 Mini Roadster exhibited a check engine light and excessive fuel consumption, suspected to be due to faulty inlet VANOS mechanics. Possible causes included a defective camshaft solenoid valve or power issues. After consulting with others who experienced similar problems, it was suggested to have a professional diagnosis. The issue was confirmed to be the inlet camshaft solenoid valve, which was repaired, resolving the problem.

Rough idle sometimes, yes. How did you pinpoint the camshaft solenoid valves? Any specific tests I can do before taking it to a mechanic? Not sure where to start.

Well, honestly, it's tough to be 100% certain without proper diagnostics, but the symptoms sound very familiar. Given the potential defect you mentioned, taking it to a workshop equipped with the right tools to diagnose the VANOS is probably the best bet. A proper BMW VANOS diagnosis isn't always straightforward.

Took my Mini Roadster to the shop. They confirmed it was the inlet camshaft solenoid valve, just like you suspected. Repair cost was around 250€. Runs like new now! Thanks a million for your help!

I had a similar issue with my BMW. Check engine light on, definitely noticed a drop in power, especially at lower RPMs. Fuel consumption was worse too. It could be VANOS failure. Does the engine sound a bit rough at idle? Have you checked the camshaft solenoid valves?
