Mini Roadster diesel issue preheating lamp and smoke

I am experiencing a persistent issue with my 2012 Mini Roadster diesel, with approximately 163604 kilometers on the odometer. The preheating lamp remains illuminated, accompanied by the check engine light. Furthermore, I've observed excessive smoke upon acceleration. Suspect a defective glow control unit, possibly a cable or plug connection issue. Any thoughts before I proceed?

Sounds like a faulty glow plug relay! I had a similar issue with my Mini Roadster. Preheating lamp wouldn't go off, and the CEL popped up. Did you check the heating element? It could be causing the engine misfire.

Heating element? You mean the glow plug itself? Or something else entirely? I've visually inspected the glow plugs, and they seem okay, but I haven't tested them individually. Where exactly should I be looking?

Yeah, the glow plug relay, glow control unit, whatever you wanna call it! If the glow plugs look alright, and you're still getting those symptoms, it's likely the unit itself. Honestly, save yourself the hassle and get it checked at a workshop. They can pinpoint the issue with a proper diagnostic test.

Thank you for the insight. It seems you were spot on with the glow control unit. Had a diagnostic test performed, and it confirmed the defect. Replaced it; total damage was 95€. Problem solved.
