Mini Roadster engine issues

My 2012 Mini Roadster diesel is giving me fits. It's starting poorly, the engine stalls at idle sometimes, and the check engine light is on. I suspect it's a defective camshaft sensor. Could this be related to a defective encoder wheel on camshafts?

I had similar issues with my Mini, though it is not a Roadster. The car stalling and engine misfire sound very familiar. Did you check the crankshaft sensor as well? I had a sensor failure that caused similar problems.

Interesting. When your crankshaft sensor went bad, did you also get a check engine light? And was the car stalling happening mostly at idle, or did it cut out while driving too?

Yes, the check engine light was on constantly. And the car stalling was primarily at idle, though I did experience a couple of engine misfire incidents at low speeds before I figured out what was going on. To be safe, I'd recommend you visit a workshop as soon as possible.

Alright, thanks for sharing your experience. I took it to a workshop, and it turns out the encoder wheel on the camshaft was indeed defective, just like you suspected. Cost me 695€ to replace the camshaft sensor. Runs like a dream now.
