Mini Roadster Stalling at Idle

My 2012 Mini Roadster is giving me fits. The check engine light is on, and it's stalling at idle. I've read a bit about it, and it seems like a fuel tank ventilation system leak could be the culprit. I'm getting somewhat consistent codes related to the EVAP system. My Roadster has almost 98000 km on it, so it seems plausible something could be worn out. I am thinking a defective activated charcoal filter could be the source of a leak detection issue. Any thoughts?

Summary of the thread

A 2012 Mini Roadster is experiencing stalling at idle and a check engine light, potentially due to a fuel tank ventilation system leak. The issue is suspected to be related to the EVAP system, with a defective activated charcoal filter being a possible cause. Suggestions include checking the purge valve, hoses for leaks, and considering professional diagnostics with a smoke tester. Ultimately, the problem was confirmed to be a defective activated charcoal filter, which was replaced, resolving the stalling and check engine light issues.

I had something similar happen with my Mini. Check engine light kept popping on, and it would occasionally stall at idle, mostly when cold. The problem ended up being related to the EVAP system. The EVAP system, or evaporative emission control system, prevents fuel vapor from escaping into the atmosphere. It uses things like the purge valve and the activated charcoal filter. Have you checked the purge valve and all the hoses for leaks? Sometimes a loose gas cap can even trigger it.

Purge valve, okay. Where exactly is that located, and how would I check it for leaks? And you mentioned the charcoal filter as well, is there a way to test the air flow through that? I'm assuming a system failure would cause the check engine light.

Yeah, a system failure will definitely trigger the check engine light. Honestly, pinpointing the exact leak in the EVAP system can be tricky without the right tools, especially if it is the charcoal canister. My issue was actually a cracked hose. If you're not comfortable diving deep, a mechanic with a smoke tester can find it pretty quickly. Otherwise, it’s a process of checking air flow and looking for cracks. It might be worth getting a quote from a shop before you spend a ton of time on it. Good luck!

Just wanted to let you know, I took the Roadster to the shop. Turns out it was a defective activated charcoal filter, just like we suspected. New filter and labor came out to 275€. Runs like a charm now, no more check engine light or stalling. Thanks for your help!
