Modus crankshaft sensor issue

My 2009 Renault Modus diesel is playing up. Check engine light's on, power's way down, fuel consumption's shot up. Mileage is 90033 km. Getting a crankshaft to camshaft reference value error. Could it be the crankshaft sensor?

Summary of the thread

A 2009 Renault Modus diesel was experiencing issues with the check engine light, reduced power, and increased fuel consumption, with a diagnostic error indicating a crankshaft to camshaft reference value problem. The initial suspicion was a faulty crankshaft sensor, but the possibility of a stretched timing chain was also considered. After taking the car to a garage, it was confirmed that the crankshaft sensor was defective, and the timing chain was checked to rule out any issues, leading to a successful repair.

Did this summary help you solve your problem?

A crankshaft/camshaft correlation error on a diesel Modus... It could be the crank sensor, but before replacing parts, have you checked the timing? Is it possible the timing chain has stretched? How does it sound on startup? Any unusual rattling?

Timing chain stretch? I hadn't thought of that. It sounds normal on startup, no nasty noises that I can hear. Is there an easy way to check the timing chain without ripping the whole engine apart?

Okay, no startup rattle is good, makes chain stretch less likely initially, but doesn't rule it out completely. Realistically, properly checking the timing chain involves specialist tools to lock the crank and camshafts in position to check the alignment. If you're not comfortable with that, I'd seriously recommend getting it to a workshop with the right diagnostic gear. A faulty crank sensor is a decent shout, but a stretched chain can cause similar symptoms and ignoring it can lead to catastrophic engine damage. Better safe than sorry.

Cheers for the advice! Took it to a garage, and you were spot on. Turns out the crankshaft sensor was indeed defective, but they checked the timing chain too, just to be sure. All in, it cost me 340€ to get sorted. Engine's running sweet as a nut now!
