Modus Engine Light and Black Smoke

I have a 2004 Renault Modus, diesel engine, with 242950 km. The check engine light is on. I've noticed reduced engine power and smoke when accelerating. Diagnostics suggest a crankcase ventilation valve issue. Has anyone else had this?

Smoke and engine light? Could be a few things. How bad is the smoke, and what colour? Black smoke is usually fuel, blue is oil, white is coolant. Which one are we talking about?

The smoke is dark, almost black. Given the crankcase ventilation issues, could this be connected to improper combustion, leading to the black smoke?

Black smoke and ventilation issue? Could be overfuelling, or maybe EGR valve problems too. Worth checking everything, but at that mileage, you're probably best off getting it looked at by someone who knows Renaults.

Inspection confirmed the crankcase ventilation valve was defective. Replacement and maintenance totaled 360€. The symptoms are now resolved.
