Modus power steering failure

Hi, I'm having power steering issues with my 2004 Renault Modus diesel. The steering wheel vibrates, handling feels spongy, and there's an error stored in the memory. Steering requires increased effort, almost like the power steering has failed. Suspecting a cable or plug connection issue. Anyone experienced similar?

Summary of the thread

A 2004 Renault Modus diesel experienced power steering issues, including steering wheel vibration, spongy handling, and increased steering effort, suggesting a power steering failure. The problem was suspected to be related to a cable or plug connection issue. After consulting with others who had similar experiences, it was advised to check for connection or wiring issues, possibly due to corrosion. The issue was resolved by cleaning and securing a defective plug connection to the power steering pump at a local garage.

Ah, the dreaded Modus steering gremlins! I had a similar issue with my Modus – not sure of the exact year, but close to yours. The symptoms sound awfully familiar. Was the fault intermittent at first, then progressively worse? Have you checked the fluid level in the power steering reservoir? Also, did you notice any unusual noises, like a whining sound from the steering pump?

Fluid level is fine, and I didn't notice any whining from the pump. It did start intermittently, you are right. Progressively got worse though, until the power steering felt like giving up completely. Can you recall what the actual cause was in your case?

Yes, the intermittent nature of the fault points even more to what I suspect. Given the symptoms and your initial diagnosis, it's very likely to be a connection or wiring issue, perhaps corrosion affecting the signal to the power steering pump. But it could be something more sinister! Ultimately, I'd suggest taking it to a workshop to get it properly diagnosed. It's too important to risk a complete failure while driving. I recall that I also considered to replace the pressure hose, steering rack and steering column, as it could have been them too. But, if it got worse, I think it's safer to get it to a mechanic, I believe it's the steering system that is at fault.

Thanks for the advice! I took it to a local garage and you were right on the money. It was indeed a defective plug connection to the power steering pump. They cleaned it up and secured it properly. Total cost was 95€ Appreciate the help!
