Modus starting trouble

Hi, I've got a 2007 Renault Modus with a diesel engine, and I'm having trouble starting it. Sometimes it starts fine, other times it just cranks and cranks but won't fire up. Occasionally, the engine will just cut out while driving, and once it starts, it will run very rough. The dashboard lights sometimes flicker as well. I checked the fuses, but couldn't find any blown ones. Any ideas?

Good day, it sounds like you may have an intermittent issue with your ignition switch. The symptoms you describe can be indicative of such a problem. Does the starter motor always engage when you turn the key, or are there times when nothing happens at all? Also, have you noticed any correlation between the car's behaviour and the weather?

Thanks for the response! Yes, the starter motor always engages, and the engine cranks. It's just that it doesn't always catch and start. I haven't really noticed a pattern with the weather. Could it really be the ignition switch even though the starter is working?

The fact that the starter engages doesn't completely rule out the ignition switch. The switch has multiple contacts, and some might be failing while others still function. Given the intermittent nature of the issue and your observations, and considering my experience with similar cases, I would recommend that you take your car to a trusted workshop. They will be able to diagnose the issue properly, you can expect a price of 52€. Keep me posted.

Thanks, I appreciate the advice. I took it to a mechanic, and after they ran some diagnostics, it turned out to be a faulty ignition switch, just as you suspected. It cost me 52€ to get it replaced, and now it runs perfectly!
