Mokka Overheating Mystery: Fan Sensor or AC Issue?

Hey everyone, my 2017 Mokka is giving me headaches. Engine's running hot and the AC won't kick in. I suspect it might be the motor fan speed sensor acting up. Has anyone dealt with similar symptoms? Would love to hear about your repair experiences and what the final fix was. Any tips on troubleshooting or workshop recommendations would be great. Thanks in advance!

Hey there! I had a similar issue with my 2019 Vauxhall Crossland (got some experience working with cars, mostly basic maintenance stuff). The symptoms you're describing sound exactly like what I dealt with last summer. The speed sensor was acting up, causing the cooling fan to malfunction. Took it to my regular workshop, and they diagnosed it pretty quickly. Had to replace the speed sensor, and it sorted out both the overheating and AC problems. Total bill was around 250€, but it was worth it – no issues since then. What's your location and current mileage? Might help narrow down some good workshop recommendations. Also, are you getting any warning lights on the dash?

Thanks for the info! Yeah, I'm at 159032 KM now and just had my service done last month. The warning lights only come on when the engine gets really hot, but they're not consistent. Sometimes they flash and sometimes they stay on. Honestly, that price doesn't sound too bad if it fixes both issues. I've been putting off getting it checked because I was worried it might be something more serious (and expensive!). I'm based in Manchester area, if anyone knows a reliable garage around here, I'd really appreciate the recommendation. Getting a bit desperate as summer's coming up and driving without AC isn't exactly fun!

Hey again! I totally get your concern about those warning lights, had the exact same thing with my Crossland. Mine was doing that inconsistent flashing thing too, which was super annoying. You're lucky you caught it at 159k, mine started acting up at around 170k km, and I stupidly drove it for a few weeks before getting it sorted (not my smartest move!). Since you're in Manchester, I can't help much with specific garage recommendations (I'm dealing with mechanics over here in Europe), but I can tell you what to look out for. When they check it, make sure they do a proper pressure test on the cooling system. In my case, they initially thought it might be a bigger issue, but the speed sensor diagnosis turned out to be spot-on. Just a heads up, if you're getting those temperature warnings, try not to push it too hard until you get it fixed. I learned that lesson the hard way! Mine started getting really temperamental in stop-and-go traffic before I got it sorted. The £220-ish repair cost was definitely worth avoiding any potential engine damage. Let us know how it goes when you get it checked out. Fingers crossed it's just the sensor like mine was!

Thanks so much for all that detailed advice! You've definitely put my mind at ease about the repair costs, and I'll make sure to get that pressure test done. I've actually been babying the car since the symptoms started, keeping an eye on the temp gauge like a hawk and avoiding heavy traffic when possible. I've just booked it in at a garage that specializes in Vauxhall cars for next Tuesday. They said they'd do a full diagnostic check first, which sounds like the right approach. Will definitely update the thread once I know what's what. Really appreciate everyone's help with this, it's great to know I'm not the only one who's dealt with this issue! Think I'll take it easy with the car until Tuesday. Better safe than sorry, right? Cheers again!
