No weird noises, and I haven't checked for leaks. I don't have the equipment. Could a defective control unit cause this?

Yes, a defective AC control unit can cause these symptoms, especially with the error code. Given the stored error and complete failure, it's plausible. Without proper diagnostics, it's hard to be certain. I'd suggest a workshop visit to confirm before replacing parts. I've seen a few Mondeos with similar issues ending up being the control unit. One case cost around 1000€.

Sounds like an AC compressor issue, which isn't uncommon. Has the system been checked for refrigerant leaks? Low refrigerant can prevent the compressor from engaging. Any unusual noises from the compressor area before it failed?
