Mondeo Hybrid MAF Sensor Symptoms
Summary of the thread
A 2017 Ford Mondeo hybrid with 147,000 kilometers is experiencing increased fuel consumption, engine stalling when idling, a persistent check engine light, and smoke during acceleration. These symptoms suggest a potential issue with the mass air flow (MAF) sensor. After checking the air filter and consulting a diagnostic report, it was confirmed that the MAF sensor was defective, leading to its replacement.

Yes, I did check the air filter; it seemed okay, not excessively dirty or clogged. Given your experience with the Insignia, were there any other diagnostic steps you took before concluding it was the MAF sensor? And did you observe smoke on acceleration as well?

After the air filter inspection yielded no resolution, I consulted a diagnostic report which pinpointed the MAF sensor as the probable cause. The smoke symptom was intermittent in my case, often coinciding with the engine stalling. Given your description, and the confluence of symptoms, a workshop assessment is advisable. They possess the equipment to accurately diagnose and rectify the mass air flow.

I took your suggestion and brought it to a workshop. Turns out you were right. The diagnostic confirmed the MAF sensor was defective, and the final repair bill including the replacement came to 365€ Appreciate the help!

Your symptoms do align with a potential MAF sensor issue. I encountered a comparable situation with my previous vehicle, a 2014 Opel Insignia, although the engine type was different (diesel). Elevated fuel consumption and engine stalling were prominent indicators. Initially, I suspected an air-fuel ratio imbalance. Did you check the air filter?
