MR2 Automatic Transmission Problems

Hey, I'm having issues with my 2002 Toyota MR2 (gasoline engine). It has 117405 km on it. The automatic transmission is shifting weird, the transmission light comes on sometimes, and it occasionally goes into emergency mode. I'm wondering if it's the transmission oil. Anyone else seen this, or could low voltage be the problem?

I have an MR2 too, and that sounds familiar. I had similar shifting issues and the transmission light. Emergency mode is definitely concerning. Have you checked the transmission fluid level and condition? If it's low or dark and sludgy, that points to a fluid issue. These transmissions are sensitive to oil condition.

Thanks for the quick reply. I haven't checked the fluid myself yet. Can you tell me more about your experience? Was it the transmission oil, and what did you do to fix it?

Yeah, for me, it was the transmission oil being discolored and degraded. Given your symptoms and mileage, worn oil is likely. If you're not comfortable checking it, get a workshop to take a look. They can check for low voltage too, and tell you if you need a flush or replacement.

Thanks, I'll take it to a workshop to get the oil checked and replaced if needed. They quoted me about 240€. Appreciate the help!
