MR2 Brake Light Issue

Hey, I'm having a weird issue with my 2003 Toyota MR2, gasoline engine, it's got about 46,616 km on the clock. The brake lights aren't working, and I'm getting an error message on the infotainment system. I checked the bulbs and the fuses seem okay too. Also, I hooked it up to a scanner, and it's throwing a 'brake light switch' error. Could a faulty switch really cause all of this? Any ideas what I should check next? It's driving me crazy!

Hi there, I had a similar issue with my MR2, although not exactly the same year. The error message, as you probably know, is what we in the business like to call 'trouble codes'. As you stated these codes are stored in the error memory. My symptoms were also error messages and the brake lights refusing to shine. The brake light switch is located near the brake pedal and can become faulty. What exactly were you doing, when the issue initially occured?

Thanks for the info! Good to know someone else has experienced something similar. When the problem started, I was just driving normally. I stopped at a light, and when I took off again, the error popped up. The error has disappeared since then. I can't really say what might have caused it, do you know what you were doing?

Yes, in my case, I was also applying the brakes. Usually the error memory helps point to the problem. In our cases the problem seems to originate from the brake pedal switch. To be honest, I would take it to a workshop just to be certain and get a qualified opinion.

Thanks so much for the help! Turns out, it was the brake light switch. But the reason why it was faulty? I had something rolling around under the driver's seat that jammed the brake pedal and I probably damaged something then... The good news is, I unjammed it, it works again and the lights work now too! No cost, lucky me.
