MR2 Engine Power Loss

I'm having a troubling issue with my 2007 Toyota MR2 with a gasoline engine. It only has 21915 km. I've noticed a significant decrease in engine power, especially when accelerating. An OBD scanner revealed an error related to the engine control unit. Could this be a major issue? Has anyone experienced something similar? I'm worried about the potential repair costs. Could it be vehicle electronics, the control system, or specifically engine control? Is there something I could try like a system reset to fix the engine performance?

Hey there! I also have an MR2, though not the same year, and I had similar problems last year: reduced power and error codes pointing to the ECU. It turned out to be a faulty main relay causing all sorts of havoc. Check that first, it's a cheap part and easy to replace. Were you getting any other weird electrical issues?

Wow, thanks so much for your quick response! A faulty main relay, you say? That's interesting! Could you please provide a bit more detail? Where is the main relay located, and is it something I could potentially replace myself, or would you recommend taking it to a professional? I'm not not very experienced with vehicle electronics, but I'm willing to give it a shot if it's relatively straightforward. Also, were your error codes specifically pointing to the ECU, or were there other codes as well?

Okay, so yeah, my error codes were all over the place, but the main one was about the ECU. Replacing the relay sorted it right out. But, honestly, if you're not super confident, I'd suggest taking it to a workshop. The main relay is usually in the engine bay fuse box, but messing with the ECU can be tricky. Best to be safe, you know?

I took your advice and brought my MR2 to a trusted mechanic. Turns out, the main relay was indeed defective! They replaced it, cleared the error codes, and now my MR2 is running like a dream again! The final repair cost was a reasonable 120€. Thanks so much for your help and guidance! Your suggestion saved me a lot of time and potential headaches. I really appreciate it!
