MR2 Throttle Problems
Summary of the thread
The 2005 Toyota MR2 is experiencing increased fuel consumption and poor starting, suspected to be due to issues with the throttle valve or accelerator pedal module. Possible causes include a faulty throttle position sensor or carbon buildup in the throttle control valve. Suggested solutions involve testing the throttle position sensor with a multimeter and inspecting the throttle control valve for buildup, using appropriate cleaning agents. Ultimately, the problem was identified as a faulty accelerator pedal module, which was replaced by a mechanic.

How do I test the throttle position sensor? And what's the best way to check the engine throttle control valve for carbon buildup? Any cleaning agents to avoid?

Use a multimeter to check the throttle position sensor's resistance values as it moves, compare to the specs if you can find them. For the throttle control valve, just look for dark, sticky stuff. Some carb cleaners are okay for throttle bodies, but test a small area first. Might be worth getting a workshop to take a look, given the engine stuff.

Took it to a mechanic. Turns out the accelerator pedal module was bad. Replacement and labor cost 205€. Thanks for the help!

Haven't worked on an MR2, but my old 2012 Opel Astra had similar issues – poor starting and worse fuel consumption. Check the throttle position sensor? Could be sending bad signals. Also, look at the engine throttle control valve for sticking or carbon buildup.
