MR2 Warning Light and Smoke

I've got a 2005 Toyota MR2 with a gasoline engine and I'm experiencing some issues. The warning light in the speedometer is on, and there's smoke when I accelerate. The car has 72268 km on it. Could this be a defective exhaust back pressure sensor?

I once experienced a similar predicament with my MR2. Do you happen to know the diagnostic trouble code (DTC) that triggered the warning light? Additionally, has there been any recent maintenance performed on the exhaust system or emission control components?

Thanks for the reply. No recent maintenance, and I don't have the DTC. Where should I start to find it? Is it possible to check the exhaust back pressure sensor myself?

Given the symptoms, and absent the specific DTC, a defective exhaust back pressure sensor remains a plausible hypothesis. While preliminary checks are feasible with a multimeter, precise diagnostics necessitate specialized equipment. The wisest course of action would be to seek counsel from a qualified technician, who can accurately diagnose the issue and recommend the appropriate remedy. I would advise visiting a reputable workshop.

Thanks for the advice. I took it to a workshop, and you were right: it was the exhaust back pressure sensor. Repair cost was 245€. All sorted now.
