Multifunction Steering Wheel Issue

Alright, so the electric 2021 Mini Cooper, with roughly 145000 km on the clock, is throwing a weird one at me. The multifunction steering wheel is completely dead. Can't control anything from it. I ran vehicle diagnostics and it's showing an error stored in the error memory, stating that the operation of the multifunction steering wheel is no longer possible, and the likely cause is a defective cable connection in the steering wheel. Anyone else run into something like this?

I had a similar issue with my Mini Cooper recently. The multifunction steering wheel stopped working, and there was an error stored. It could be a faulty control module. Before you go too deep, though, have you checked the basics like the connection to the steering column? Is the error consistently present, or is it intermittent?

Thanks for the quick reply! When you say you had a similar issue, was it exactly the same symptoms? I'm wondering if you recall what the error code was specifically. Also, where did you check the connection to the steering column exactly? I've had a look, but I'm not entirely sure what I'm looking for.

Yes, the symptoms were identical. Unfortunately, I don't recall the exact error code. I didn't troubleshoot it myself beyond a visual inspection of the easily accessible connections. Honestly, given the potential for messing with airbags and other sensitive components, I'd recommend taking it to a workshop with experience in vehicle diagnostics. They'll be able to pinpoint the problem and properly diagnose the steering wheel control module.

Just wanted to give a quick update. Took your advice and brought it in. Turns out the cable connection in the steering wheel was indeed defective, just like the vehicle diagnostics pointed out. They replaced it, cleared the error memory, and everything's working perfectly again. Total cost was 95€. Thanks for the insights!
