Thanks for the detailed response! Yeah, I've got a 2010 X3 with 32624 KM on the clock since my last service in June. The issues actually started pretty suddenly during a rainy week. I checked the sensor area like you mentioned, and you're onto something, I can see some weird discoloration around the sensor mount. Definitely looks like moisture might have gotten in there. Think I'll get it checked out at my regular shop since your fix sounds pretty straightforward. Hope it's just the gel pad like in your case!

Hey again! Just saw your follow-up about your X3. Those symptoms definitely match what I experienced with my X1, especially since you mentioned it started during a rainy period, that's exactly how mine began acting up too! The discoloration you're seeing around the sensor mount is a dead giveaway. It's pretty much identical to what I dealt with on my car. When moisture creeps in there, it really messes with all those automated functions. Since your X3 was recently serviced in June, I'd definitely mention this to your regular shop. They might even be able to work something out since it's not been that long since the last service. The gel pad replacement I had done was a pretty quick fix, my mechanic had it sorted in about an hour. Just a heads up though, make sure they recalibrate the sensor after replacing the gel pad. My mechanic initially forgot this step, and I had to bring it back because the auto functions were still a bit wonky. After the recalibration, everything worked like new again. Keep me posted on how it goes! Always good to know if others are having the same experience with their BMWs.

Thanks so much for all the help! Really appreciate you mentioning that recalibration detail, I'll definitely make sure to bring that up when I take it in. My shop's actually got an opening tomorrow morning, so I'll be taking it in first thing. You've saved me a lot of worry here, was thinking it might be something way more serious (and expensive). Will let you know how it turns out, but feeling pretty confident now that this'll be a straightforward fix. Good to know these BMWs can have similar quirks! I should probably keep an eye on that sensor area during rainy seasons from now on.

Hey there! I've got some experience with cars, and I actually faced something similar with my 2012 BMW X1 last year. From what you're describing, it does sound like the rain/light sensor module is the culprit. When my X5 had this issue, I noticed bubbles forming under the gel pad where the sensor sits on the windshield. This caused similar symptoms, malfunctioning auto wipers, headlights going crazy, and dimming issues. Took it to my regular workshop, and they confirmed the sensor was damaged by moisture getting in. They had to replace the gel pad and recalibrate the sensor. Cost me about 62 Euro, and everything's been working perfectly since then. Could you tell me if you see any bubbles or discoloration near the sensor area on your windshield? Also, when did these issues start, was it gradual or sudden? This info would help me give you more specific advice about whether you're dealing with the same problem I had.
