Multiple VW Systems Down, Cold Weather Link Found

Got multiple issues with my 2015 VW Beetle that seem connected. The AC wont turn on, mirror heating stopped working, and washer nozzles freeze up in cold weather. Also getting an error code stored. Could this point to a faulty vehicle temperature sensor? Has anyone dealt with similar symptoms and gotten a temperature sensor replacement? Wondering what the diagnostic process looked like and how your repair shop handled it. Any insights on similar fixes would be really helpful, especially if you had multiple systems affected like this.

As someone with moderate experience working on cars, I dealt with nearly identical issues on my 2013 VW Golf GTI. The symptoms you describe strongly suggest problems with the outside temperature sensor readings, which can affect multiple systems. After noticing similar issues, particularly with the AC and mirror heating malfunctions, my car temperature sensor was showing inconsistent readings. The workshop ran sensor diagnostics and found that water had gotten into the wiring harness connector, causing intermittent communication issues between the sensor and the control modules. The fix involved replacing a corroded plug connection and recalibrating the temperature monitoring system. Total repair cost was 95€, which included the sensor calibration and diagnostic work. The repair resolved all the connected issues, AC, mirror heating, and washer nozzle problems. To provide more specific guidance for your case, could you share: Current mileage on your Beetle, Whether the check engine light is on, The specific error code stored, When these issues first appeared, If the problems occur more frequently in certain weather conditions The temperature sensor setup is quite similar between the Golf and Beetle models, so your repair process might be comparable. Getting these details would help confirm if youre dealing with the same underlying issue.

My Beetle has 135172km and had its last service 3 months ago. A suggested I check the car temperature sensor first, which makes sense given those similar Golf issues you mentioned. The check engine light started flickering last week and error P0116 is stored according to my OBD reader. The AC completely died yesterday but was working intermittently before that. These problems started getting worse with colder weather. The mirror heating stopped about a month ago, and the washer nozzles began freezing more frequently than normal. Makes me think the vehicle temperature sensor is giving bad readings to multiple systems. Hearing about your 95€ repair gives me hope this wont be too expensive. Did your repair shop need to order any special parts or was it mainly fixing the connection?

Had the same concern about parts availability, but in my case the workshop had the connector in stock since its a common issue. The wiring harness connector for the vehicle temperature sensor is a standard VW part used across multiple models. The P0116 error code and symptoms match exactly what I experienced. My temperature gauge was also showing erratic readings before the sensor replacement. Since youre seeing the same weather-related pattern with the failing systems, its very likely the sensor itself is compromised. The repair process was straightforward: Sensor diagnostics confirmed faulty readings, Cleaned corrosion from connector area, Replaced damaged connector, Performed sensor calibration, Cleared error codes, Tested all affected systems One tip: make sure they check both the sensor and wiring thoroughly. In my case, water intrusion had traveled along the wire, causing issues beyond just the connector. The full sensor calibration after repair was crucial for getting all systems working properly again. With your mileage being close to mine when I had the issue, this type of failure is pretty typical. The total repair time was about 2 hours including all testing and sensor calibration steps.

Thanks for the details about the P0116 code and timing of the issues. Given the mileage and weather-related problems, I definitely want to get this checked soon. The outside temperature sensor does seem like the likely culprit, especially since it matches your Golf experience so closely. Good to know about checking both the sensor and wiring, I'll make sure to mention that to my mechanic. My washer nozzles are getting worse with the cold, so I want to get this sorted before any permanent damage occurs to the temperature monitoring systems. Will book it in next week and have them do a full diagnostic on the temperature sensor setup. The 95€ repair cost sounds reasonable if it fixes all these connected issues. Hopefully my connector replacement and sensor calibration will be as straightforward as yours was. Will update once I know if water damage caused similar problems with my wiring harness. Really appreciate you sharing your repair experience, gives me a much better idea of what to expect.
