I haven't checked the spark plugs yet, to be honest. I was kind of hoping it wasn't something that simple. A vacuum leak seems plausible though. How would I go about checking for that?

A vacuum leak can be tricky. Sometimes you can hear a hissing sound. As for the plugs: Given the mileage and symptoms, I'd say get it to a workshop. The injectors might be defective, causing a rich mixture and potentially damaging the catalytic converter. Could also be a faulty sensor messing with the fuel mixture. Best to get it diagnosed properly before things get worse.

I appreciate the advice. I took it to the shop, and you were right – it was a defective fuel injector. Total cost was 515€. Runs like new again.

Sounds like a mixture preparation error. Have you checked the usual suspects like spark plugs or the throttle body? Could also be a vacuum leak in the intake manifold causing it to run lean. When was the last time the spark plugs were changed?
