N300 engine knocking

I'm having trouble with my 2014 Chevy N300, gasoline engine. It's got 172359 km on the clock, and lately, it's been running rough. I'm getting a nasty knocking sound – sounds like detonation – especially when I accelerate. It feels like I've lost power, and it's jerking. Plus, there's smoke coming out the back when I put my foot down! I scanned it and there's an error code stored, but I haven't dug into it yet. Could it be something to do with the ignition timing or maybe deposits in the combustion chamber? Any ideas?

Summary of the thread

A 2014 Chevy N300 with 172,359 km is experiencing engine knocking, reduced power, jerking, and smoke, likely due to detonation. Possible causes include ignition timing issues or deposits in the combustion chamber. A professional assessment and cleaning are recommended to resolve the problem, as DIY methods may risk further engine damage. After a workshop visit, the issue was confirmed to be deposits, and a professional cleaning restored the vehicle's performance.

Sounds rough! Given the mileage and symptoms – reduced power, jerking, smoke, and knocking – deposits in the combustion chamber are a likely culprit. Has the car had any engine tuning work done recently, or has it been running differently before this started? How often do you check your oil level?

No engine tuning work, everything is factory standard. Oil level is good, I check it every few weeks. So, if it is deposits, is that something I can try to clean myself, or am I looking at a cylinder heads-off kinda job? Any specific things I should be looking for?

While there are DIY combustion chamber cleaning methods, I'd strongly suggest against it if you're not experienced. The risk of damaging the engine outweighs the potential savings. Detonation issues can quickly cause significant damage. Based on your description, a workshop visit is advisable to assess the extent of the problem and carry out a professional cleaning or address any other underlying issues.

Thanks for the advice! I took it to a workshop, and you were spot on. They confirmed it was deposits in the combustion chamber causing the knocking. They did a proper cleaning, and it cost me about 425€, but now it's running like new again. Really appreciate the help!
