Nemo engine knocking

I own a 2007 Citroen Nemo with a gasoline engine and I'm experiencing a strange issue. It feels like the engine is knocking, especially when accelerating. It's lost some power, and jerks a bit when I put my foot down. Plus, there's some smoke coming out when I accelerate hard and diagnostic tool shows a stored error. The car has 128482 km on it. Could it be bad fuel or something? I'm not very familiar with car repairs.

Summary of the thread

A 2007 Citroen Nemo owner is experiencing engine knocking, reduced power, jerking during acceleration, and smoke emission, with a diagnostic tool showing an error. The issue might be caused by carbon deposits in the combustion chamber, potentially exacerbated by using regular unleaded gasoline. A suggested solution is to use a fuel additive to clean the system, but a professional workshop visit is recommended for proper diagnosis and cleaning, as the problem may require checking the cylinder heads.

Did this summary help you solve your problem?

I also have a Nemo, and your symptoms sound eerily familiar to a problem I encountered some time ago. Reduced power, jerking, smoke – it's like deja vu! Have you considered looking into carbon deposits in the combustion chamber? It can cause knocking combustion, similar to a hammer banging inside the engine. What fuel octane are you using?

Thanks for the quick response! Carbon deposits... that sounds serious. I've always just used regular unleaded gasoline. Could that be the culprit? If it is carbon deposits, is there anything I can do myself, or is it strictly a workshop job?

Using regular unleaded could contribute, as it might not be burning as cleanly as higher octane fuel. However, if the deposits are already there, switching fuel probably won’t solve it. You could try a fuel additive designed to clean the fuel system, but honestly, given the symptoms and error code, a workshop visit is advisable. They have tools to properly diagnose and clean the combustion chamber. My Nemo had to have the cylinder heads checked; the final bill came to around 425€. Think of it like a blocked artery needing a proper check-up; better safe than sorry, right?

Okay, I understand. I appreciate the analogy and the advice. It does sound like a job for the professionals. I'll book it into the workshop and mention the possibility of carbon deposits in the combustion chamber. Thank you for your help!
