Nissan Kicks check engine light and VANOS issue
Summary of the thread
A 2016 Nissan Kicks owner is experiencing a check engine light, increased fuel consumption, and rough idling, suspecting a VANOS issue, possibly due to a camshaft solenoid valve defect or power supply problem. The symptoms align with common VANOS failures, which affect engine timing and performance. It is advised to consult a qualified mechanic for diagnosis and repair to prevent further engine damage.

Thanks for your reply. Yeah, sorry I didn't mention the rough idling, that's there too. I read online that the error codes thrown when the check engine light comes on are related to variable timing, and mentioned the camshaft solenoid valves and their power supply. Does that ring a bell?

I see. If the error codes point directly to the VANOS and you're experiencing rough idling on top of the increased fuel consumption and check engine light, it does sound quite plausible that there's an issue with the VANOS system itself. I recommend consulting a qualified mechanic for a proper diagnosis and repair. Ignoring it could lead to more significant engine problems down the road. I did have a similar set of symptoms once and it turned out to be the VANOS; it cost me around 250€ to fix.

Thanks so much! I will book it in. Sounds like a workshop visit is inevitable. Hopefully, it's a simple solenoid replacement!

Interesting. I have a Nissan Kicks myself. If I understand correctly, your check engine light is on, and you suspect the VANOS, specifically the camshaft solenoid valves? VANOS, or Variable Valve Timing, is what adjusts the engine timing for optimal performance. Low power or rough idling are also common signs of VANOS failure, but you didn't mention those. What makes you suspect the VANOS?
