I haven't checked the transmission fluid level, and no, there hasn't been any prior work done on the transmission. Is it likely that the control unit is faulty? What else could it be?

Given the symptoms, mileage, and absence of prior transmission work, a defective TCU is indeed the most probable cause. The grinding noises might be symptomatic of mechanical damage resulting from the TCU malfunctions, leading to incorrect shift patterns and pressures. While a thorough diagnostic procedure is necessary to confirm this, it's advisable to consult a workshop experienced in automatic transmission diagnosis. The cost to get it fixed will likely be around 1000€.

Thanks for the insights. I'll take it to a shop to get the TCU checked and replaced. Seems like that is the issue.

The symptoms you describe suggest a fault within the transmission control unit (TCU). Slipping, unclean shifts, and emergency mode activation are typical indicators. The error code stored in the memory should be retrieved for a more precise diagnosis. Has the transmission fluid level been checked recently? And has there been any prior work done on the transmission?
