Nissan Patrol Camshaft Sensor Issue
Summary of the thread
A 2001 Nissan Patrol diesel was experiencing starting issues and stalling at idle, with the check engine light on. The initial suspicion was a faulty camshaft sensor, possibly due to a bad encoder wheel. After scanning the OBD port, a camshaft sensor error code was confirmed, indicating that the sensor was likely causing misfires and stalling. The recommended solution was to have the sensor and encoder wheel checked and replaced by a professional workshop, which resolved the issue.

I scanned the OBD port and it gave me a camshaft sensor error code. It does misfire, especially when starting. Could a faulty camshaft sensor cause the engine to stall at idle, or could there be something else?

That error code pretty much confirms it. A bad camshaft sensor definitely messes with the fuel/air mixture and timing, causing the stalling and misfires. That’s why the check engine light is on. Other things could contribute, but the sensor is the prime suspect. Honestly, it's probably best to take it to a trusted workshop. They can confirm and replace the sensor. DIY without the right tools could cost you more.

I took it to a workshop, and they confirmed it was the camshaft sensor and encoder wheel. The repair was 695€. It's running great now. Thanks!

Sounds plausible. Camshaft sensors can really mess with your engine. Is it misfiring? Ignition timing could be off if the sensor is sending bad data. Have you scanned the OBD port for error codes? That's usually the first step. Let me know what you find!
