Nissan Winner Stalling Rough Idle

I'm having a frustrating issue with my 2001 Nissan Winner with a gasoline engine. It's got just under 30,000 km on the clock. Lately, it's been really struggling to start, and when it does, it sometimes stalls, especially when idling. The check engine light is now constantly on. I've also noticed the engine running rougher than usual and my fuel consumption seems to have increased. I scanned for error codes, and there's definitely something stored in the memory. I suspect it might be a fuel pump issue, possibly a defective cable or plug connection. Could this be the culprit? Any advice on where to start diagnosing?

Summary of the thread

The 2001 Nissan Winner is experiencing starting difficulties, stalling, rough idling, and increased fuel consumption, with the check engine light on. The suspected cause is a defective fuel pump cable or plug connection. Suggestions include checking the fuel injectors, measuring fuel pressure, and inspecting the fuel pump relay. Ultimately, a professional diagnosis confirmed a defective fuel pump cable connection, which was repaired, resolving the issue.

I have a Nissan Winner too, though I'm not sure about the year. I had almost the exact same symptoms a while back – engine stalling, check engine light, the works! It drove me crazy. Have you checked the fuel injectors? A faulty injector can cause similar problems, like rough running and poor fuel economy. I would also recommend you to measure the fuel pressure. I ended up having a problem with the fuel pump relay. Is the engine struggling even if the fuel tank is full?

Thanks for the quick reply! I haven't specifically checked the fuel injectors yet, but that's a good suggestion. The engine seems to struggle regardless of how full the fuel tank is. Where exactly is the fuel pump relay located, and how can I test it? What's the easiest way to measure the fuel pressure?

Okay, so the fuel level isn't the issue. That's one thing ruled out. Honestly, I'm not entirely sure about the exact location of the fuel pump relay on the Winner. I just took mine to a workshop. I think it's better to avoid any issues if you're not that experienced. It is probably a defective cable or plug connection as you suggested. My experience was very similar to your described issue and it was a defective component. Given all the symptoms you're describing, especially with the error code stored, I'd strongly recommend getting it checked out by a professional. You don't want to risk causing further damage.

Thanks for the advice! I think you're right; I'll take it to a workshop to get it properly diagnosed. The mechanic confirmed it was indeed a defective fuel pump cable connection, and the repair cost me around 95€. Runs like new now!
