Noise problems with Audi Q7: cause and solution for loud exhaust flap

Hello everyone, I have a problem with my Audi Q7, built in 2009, which now has a whopping 256871 kilometers on the clock. I've recently noticed that the engine is loud when it's cold and the exhaust is also humming quite loudly. I suspect it has something to do with the exhaust flap. Has anyone had similar problems and can give me advice on what I should look out for at the garage? Thanks in advance!

(Translated from German)

Summary of the thread

An Audi Q7 owner experienced loud engine and exhaust noises, particularly when the engine was cold, suspecting the exhaust flap as the cause. Similar issues in other vehicles, like an Audi Q5, were attributed to discrepancies in the exhaust flap control, which were easily fixed. The suggested solution was to have a mechanic inspect and repair the exhaust flap system, which proved effective, resolving the noise issue with a minor repair.

Did this summary help you solve your problem?

Hello everyone, thank you all for your advice and experience. I went to the mechanic today and he said a small repair would suffice, just as you suspected. The repair will cost me about 120 euros, which I think is absolutely reasonable considering the possible complications. And the best thing is that my Audi is now running smoothly again and the annoying noise is a thing of the past. Thanks a million, guys! Your help was really worth its weight in gold. All the best and best wishes!

Hi, your problem sounds similar to my 2012 Audi Q5, which I recently had in the workshop. They found that the noise was caused by a small discrepancy in the exhaust flap control. It was nothing serious and was relatively easy to fix. I would recommend that you describe these symptoms to your trusted mechanic. Don't worry, it's not a big deal and you don't have to lose your head over such a small thing. Good luck at the workshop and I hope this helps you a little! Best regards

Hi, thanks for the tip! That actually reassures me a little. Can you remember roughly what you paid for the repair? And has anything else similar occurred since then or is everything running smoothly now? Many thanks and best regards!

Hi, I'm glad my answer has put your mind at rest. After I had the mechanic on it, my Q5 ran like a kitten. Regarding your question: I paid around 100 euros to have the exhaust flap repaired. Nothing similar has happened since. So everything is tip-top. Hope that helps you. Let me know how it went! Best regards!

Hey guys, I had a similar situation with my old VW Touran. With mileage as high as on your Q7, it may well be that the system with the exhaust flap is no longer working as it should. It is possible that the flap is no longer opening or closing properly, which could explain the noise. I would also second the advice of the others and say have your mechanic take a look at the flap system.
