Odyssey transmission torque converter issue

Hey, I'm having trouble with my 2000 Honda Odyssey (gasoline engine). It's got 227204 km on it, and I think the automatic transmission torque converter lock-up clutch is defective. The check engine light and transmission indicator light are both on. The gearbox slips and shifts uncleanly, and there are some nasty grinding noises when it shifts. I scanned it and there's an error stored in the memory, pointing towards the torque converter. Has anyone else run into something like this? Is my transmission doomed?

Summary of the thread

A 2000 Honda Odyssey is experiencing transmission issues, with symptoms including a defective torque converter lock-up clutch, check engine and transmission indicator lights, gearbox slipping, unclean shifts, and grinding noises. The problem is likely linked to the torque converter, as indicated by error codes and engine surging at highway speeds. Immediate attention from a transmission specialist is advised to prevent further damage and higher repair costs.

Wow, that sounds rough! I have an Odyssey myself, though I can't remember the exact year, and a slipping transmission is no fun. Grinding noises? Yikes! I had similar symptoms a while back – the check engine light, the rough shifting... Did you notice any engine surge at highway speeds, almost like it's struggling to find the right gear?

Engine surge, you say? Now that you mention it, yes! I have noticed that, especially when going uphill. It feels like it can't decide what gear it wants to be in. What was the cause of the issue in your case? Was it indeed the converter?

Yup, the engine surge was the big clue for me. It was the torque converter, unfortunately. My advice? Get it checked out by a transmission specialist ASAP. Continuing to drive it like that could cause even more damage. In the end, the repairs will cost you even more. Better to get it sorted now.

Thanks for the insight! I was dreading it, but it sounds like I need to bite the bullet and take it to a workshop. The error memory also leads to the torque converter. I'll get it checked out properly and see what they say. I see repair cost between 1800€ and 2500€, which is a scary prospect but better than destroying the whole transmission. Thank you again. I appreciate your help!
