Oil Pressure Warning Lamp Flickering
Summary of the thread
The oil pressure warning lamp flickering in a 2009 Vauxhall Insignia was linked to an error related to the engine oil temperature sensor. The issue was suspected to be caused by a faulty cable or plug connection rather than the sensor itself. A visual inspection for damage, corrosion, or loose connections was recommended. Ultimately, the problem was resolved by a garage, which identified and fixed a corroded cable to the oil temperature sensor, clearing the error and resolving the warning light issue.

Thanks for the reply! Good analogy. I had a quick look at the plug and wires, but honestly, I'm no expert. Where exactly should I be looking for corrosion or damage? Is there a common spot where these things tend to fail? I don’t want to miss something obvious before I start ripping things apart.

You raise a valid point. Given your description, and in light of the diagnostic trouble code you retrieved, the most probable cause is indeed a defective cable or plug connection to the component. While a thorough inspection is always recommended, focusing on the immediate vicinity of the sensor and any points where the wiring harness is secured or routed is a good starting point. At this juncture, given the potential complexity and the presence of an active warning, I would recommend seeking the assistance of a qualified automotive technician. They possess the specialized tools and expertise to accurately diagnose and rectify the issue.

Thanks for confirming my suspicions and pointing me in the right direction. I bit the bullet and took it to a local garage. Turns out you were spot on! The cable to the oil temp sensor was corroded. They cleaned it up, replaced the connector, and cleared the code. Cost me 95€, which is way better than a new engine! All good now.

The symptoms you describe are indeed indicative of a potential issue with the engine oil temperature sensor circuit. However, before definitively concluding that the sensor itself is faulty, it would be prudent to investigate a few preliminary aspects. Have you inspected the wiring harness and connector associated with the engine oil temperature sensor for any signs of damage, corrosion, or loose connections? A visual inspection may reveal the root cause, which could be a simple wiring fault rather than a defective sensor. Consider it like checking the lightbulb before replacing the entire lamp.
