Opel Zafira 2013: Black smoke, loss of power and unsteady engine - Possible malfunction in the boost pressure system?

Unsteady engine

Stalling while idling

Shaking while idling

Whistling noise

Jerking on acceleration

Black smoke from exhaust on acceleration

Loud hissing on acceleration

Check engine light on

Loss of engine power

Hello folks! I'm currently struggling with a few issues with my 2013 Opel Zafira (gasoline engine, already 195,976 km down). The thing is doing some really strange things: When accelerating, black smoke comes out of the exhaust and the check engine light is on. Then I have a loss of power and a restless engine that jerks when accelerating and makes really annoying noises, like hissing and whistling noises. As if that wasn't enough, it also stalls when idling and shakes a lot. I have a suspicion that all this fuss could have something to do with a malfunction in the boost pressure system. Have any of you ever experienced something similar? How did you fix it? And what was your experience with the workshop? I was really fooled on my last visit to the mechanic, so I'm a bit cautious at the moment. It would be great if you could share your experiences with me. Many thanks in advance!

Hey buddy! I had the same problem with my Opel Insignia from 2010. Could really be mechanical damage to the turbocharger, as you suspect. My mechanic inspected the turbocharger and the diagnosis was exactly that. It was actually a pretty serious issue. The hissing and whistling noises you describe are probably coming from the broken turbocharger. The black clouds of smoke and the loss of power are also typical. And the jerking? Probably the result of unburned fuel. We eventually had to replace the turbocharger. It was a tricky job, but afterwards my Insignia ran like a dream again. Hope that helps you!

Hey, thanks for the tip, Dude! That sounds exactly like my problem. Quite annoying, the turbocharger... Can you remember how much the whole thing cost you in total? And since the repair, have there been any other problems with the car? Would be really great to know if I need to be prepared to repair more than just the turbocharger. Thanks a lot!

Hey, no problem, always happy to help! So, I paid €1070 for the whole repair to the turbocharger back then. It's no bargain, of course, but since then the problem with the boost pressure system has been fixed and I've had no more particular worries about it. An important point, however, is that you find a good mechanic who won't take money out of your pocket. So before you decide on anything, get a few quotes. Good luck, hopefully your Zafira will be fit again soon!

That's a bit more than a thousand euros, huh? It's a lot of money, but if it can fix the problems, it's probably a sensible investment. I'll definitely get a few more quotes and hopefully find a reputable mechanic. Thanks for the good advice and help, that was really helpful. I hope that my Zafira will run like your Insignia. Best regards!

It sounds like you might be dealing with a drivetrain issue. This could be due to a worn out clutch, faulty engine mounts, or a problem with the transmission. I would suggest starting with the easiest check - inspect the engine mounts for any signs of wear or damage. If they look fine, you might want to have your clutch and transmission checked by a professional. Please keep us updated on your progress. Do you have any other questions?
