Overheating and A/C failure in Renault Modus 2011: experience and advice wanted
(Translated from German)
Summary of the thread
A 2011 Renault Modus is experiencing overheating and A/C failure, possibly due to a broken engine fan speed sensor. A similar issue in a Renault Scenic was caused by a faulty control unit (ECU), which required replacement. The ECU controls various car functions, including engine speed and A/C systems. It is advised to have the vehicle checked by a mechanic to prevent further issues, as the repair might involve significant time and cost but could resolve the problem effectively.

Hey, thanks for your quick feedback! What you say makes sense - I probably won't be able to avoid having it checked by a mechanic. Do you remember how much it cost you to replace this control unit back then? And has anything like that happened again since then, or is everything running smoothly now?

Hey, no problem, that's what we're here for! The repair of my control unit cost about €1000 back then - pretty hefty, I know. But since then everything has been running smoothly and I haven't had any more problems. The issue with the engine fan speed sensor has also been resolved, the mechanic fixed it for me straight away. It's a bit of money to put on the table, but afterwards you really are back on the road in one piece. So I can only advise you not to avoid it. Good luck with it!

Hey, thanks again for your help! Even though the price is really high, it's probably better to tackle this before anything else breaks. I can also take the opportunity to have the speed sensor checked. Keep your fingers crossed that everything works as well as it did for you in the end! I'll keep you up to date.

Hey, I feel the same way! I have a 2014 Renault Scenic and had the same problem with overheating and the A/C system not working. After a lot of back and forth, it turned out that there was a problem with the control unit - it was faulty. This was a serious thing - the ECU is like the brain of the car, it controls many functions including the engine speed and A/C systems, just as you suspected. The mechanic had to remove the old ECU and replace it with a new one, which took some time. It was not an easy fix and unfortunately I was without a car for a while. If your ECU is also faulty, you should expect your car to be in the garage for a few days. This is just my experience of course, but it sounds like you have the exact same problem. I would advise you to go to the mechanic and get it checked out. It's better to do it now before it gets even hotter and your A/C system is stressed even more. Good luck!
