Overheating and engine indicator light on VW Sharan 2005: experience and tips wanted

Hello friends, I have a few problems with my 2005 VW Sharan gasoline engine. It has almost 190,000 km on the clock and is now showing me the check engine light and overheating problems. I suspect it could be a fault with the coolant bypass valve. Have any of you had similar problems and can share your experiences at the mechanic? My last visit there was rather suboptimal. Thanks in advance & best regards!

Hello, I drive a 2002 VW Touran and had a similar problem last year. The check engine light suddenly came on and the temp indicator went up. Like you, I first suspected it was something with the coolant bypass valve. However, in my case it was a bit more serious - the thermostat was broken and had to be replaced. Check whether your thermostat is still working properly. This was very important for my car and could have led to major engine problems if it hadn't been repaired in time. Hope this helps you a bit! Best regards!

Hi, ui, that doesn't sound so great with the thermostat. I'll see if my VW Sharan has the same problem. Since you've already been through it: Do you remember how much the repair cost you at the mechanic? And have you encountered any other problems since then? Thanks again and best regards!

Hey, yes, the thermostat was really annoying. Luckily it wasn't my fault, it was actually the coolant bypass valve. But since I've been to the mechanic, everything is fine again. The fault with the engine coolant bypass valve has been rectified - so no more worries about overheating and so on. The cost? Well, it cost me a few bob - €155 to be precise for my mechanic to fix the coolant bypass valve cable connection. Since then, however, everything has been working perfectly again and no further problems have arisen so far. Best wishes and good luck with your car!

Hi, thanks for this detailed description of the coolant bypass valve issue. It's a sum that hurts at first, but if the problem is solved afterwards, that's probably the best way. I'll make an appointment with my mechanic tomorrow and hope it's nothing more serious. Many thanks and best wishes!
