Overheating and problems with the engine control lamp in Mercedes X-Class Diesel 2020

Hey guys, I'm a bit worried about my 2020 Mercedes X-Class diesel, which has now run 112,950 km. The good one is showing overheating and the check engine light has also come on. I didn't have a good run at the last mechanic visit, so I'm skeptical. Do you think it could be due to a faulty coolant temperature sensor? Have you had similar experiences or can you recommend a reliable mechanic? Any help is welcome!

Hey, I fully understand your concerns. I had the same problems with my 2017 Mercedes E-Class. It was also the engine control unit. In my case, the coolant sensors were simply defective when the overheating indicator went off. It turned out that my engine control unit was faulty. It was constantly entering the wrong data - really annoying. This is a serious problem, as this type of defect can affect many engine components. All the faulty sensors and the entire engine control unit were replaced. It was quite a job. I can only recommend you get it checked as soon as possible, it won't get better if you ignore it, just more complicated. I hope your Benz is back to full power soon!

Hey, thanks for your reply. Nice to know I'm not alone with this problem! As you say, I probably shouldn't wait too long to sort it out. Can you remember the cost you incurred for the repair? And have you had any other similar problems since the repair or did everything go smoothly? Your experience would really help me get some perspective.

Hey, no problem, always happy to help! So, to answer your questions: Yes, after everything was repaired, I had zero problems, everything has been running smoothly again since then. The coolant temperature sensor gave correct readings as soon as the mechanic replaced it - my car hasn't overheated since. It was a real relief! Now to the costs... it wasn't cheap to be honest. The engine control unit was the main problem and the repair cost me around €1000. But be aware that this part is so important for the functionality of the whole engine. I would therefore advise you not to save money in the wrong place, even if it seems a bit expensive at first. It could end up costing you more if other parts break due to the faulty ECU. I hope this helps you!

Hey, your answer is super helpful! Thank you so much for sharing your experience. It calms my nerves a little to know that you haven't had any similar problems since the repair. And you're right, it would probably be wiser to invest now and get to the bottom of the problem rather than having to spend more money on consequential damage later. I will make an appointment with the mechanic and hopefully all will go well. Thanks again for your helpful advice! I really appreciate it.
