Overheating in the BMW Z4 (2015) - experience and solutions wanted

Hello, I have a problem with my BMW Z4 (built in 2015, gasoline engine). The air conditioning only blows warm air and the car often overheats. I suspect that the electric fan is not working properly. Have any of you ever had a similar problem? How did you get it fixed at the garage and what was your experience? I would appreciate any advice and tips! Thanks in advance.

Summary of the thread

The BMW Z4 (2015) is experiencing issues with overheating and the air conditioning only blowing warm air. The suspected cause is a malfunctioning electric fan. A similar issue was resolved by replacing a faulty electric fan resistor. It was suggested to take the car to a garage for a diagnosis and potentially point out the resistor as the issue. Another problem arose with a BMW 528xi after replacing a worn-out coolant hose connector, which resulted in high engine temperature and fan activation. This was suspected to be due to a defective temperature sensor. A corroded contact on the temperature sensor was identified as a possible cause.

Did this summary help you solve your problem?

Hi, I can report a similar problem. I have a BMW Z3 from 2013, so it's very similar to your Z4. As I have no idea about cars, I had to go to the garage. The mechanic told me that the electric fan resistor was faulty. The cost to fix it was 480 euros. It was a bit expensive, but everything worked perfectly again afterwards. You could of course also go to a garage and ask for a diagnosis. For more specific tips, could you please send me more information about your vehicle? For example, the specific engine output or whether you have already read out error codes. Then I might be able to help you more specifically.

Thanks for the tip. My car has not displayed any specific error codes. The fan just doesn't seem to be working. Have driven 69789 km so far and the last service was only recently, but the problem existed before that. Hmm, I think I'll look around for a garage and point out the resistance. The cost is a bit of a deterrent, but if it helps it will have been worth it. Thanks again!

Hello there! No problem, you're welcome! If the fan really isn't working and you don't have any fault codes, the faulty electric fan is very likely. With the number of kilometers you've driven, it's a possibility. It's a bit expensive, but the important thing is that it works again afterwards. I hope the problem is solved soon! Good luck and hopefully no excessive costs in the workshop. Let us know how it goes!

Hello again! That sounds conclusive, thanks for the feedback. I'll take your advice to heart and tell the garage about the electric fan control unit. Hopefully the price won't hurt too much. I'll let you know as soon as I have any news! Thanks again for your help!

The coolant hose connector on my 2008 BMW 528xi wore out and the hose became disconnect and coolant leak out. After replacing the connect with a new one, I now get a message saying the engine temperature is high and the electric coolant pump, power-reduced operation (002E83) and the electronics-box fan, activation (002F71). I filled up the coolant and the low-level lights goes away but I hear the fan kick in like its trying to cool off the engine. What's going on and what cause the new issues after the connector was replaced?

Hello That sounds to me like a defective temperature sensor. This problem is usually caused by a defective map thermostat, but your vehicle probably doesn't have this component yet.

I had a similar problem. One of the contacts on my temperature sensor was corroded, which meant that no more values could be measured. I immediately replaced the sensor. At the same time, I also checked the cable connections in my vehicle to rule out any other impending faults.
