Overheating problems with a 2010 BMW 3 Series gasoline engine

Hello, repair professionals! I have problems with my 2010 BMW 3 Series gasoline engine. The car keeps overheating and the check engine light comes on. I'm not a mechanic, but I think the thermostat might be the problem. Have any of you ever had the same problem and can give some advice? I'm particularly interested in how your garage fixed it and what your experiences were. Thanks in advance for your help!

Summary of the thread

A 2010 BMW 3 Series with a gasoline engine is experiencing overheating issues and a check engine light. The suspected cause is a faulty thermostat, as similar symptoms were resolved by replacing the thermostat in another BMW 3 Series. The suggested solution is to have the thermostat checked and potentially replaced, which previously cost around €270 including parts and labor.

Did this summary help you solve your problem?

Hey, I had a similar problem with my 2012 BMW 5 series diesel. In my case, it was damage to the wiring harness that caused the indicator light to come on. I had it fixed in the garage and it only cost me €120.

Hey, thanks for the answer. My BMW petrol 3 Series already has a decent 224851 kilometers on the clock. Like your 3 Series, it's already got a few years under its belt. I also notice that it mainly overheats when I go on longer journeys. Does this also apply to your car? And if it's the thermostat, do you know how much it might cost to replace it? Every penny is important at the moment, thank you!

Hey, glad you reached out to the community. Well, I actually had a similar problem with my old 2009 BMW 3 series gasoline engine, and yes, for me it was the thermostat. Your symptoms were exactly like mine. My indicator light was on and my car was also constantly overheating - especially on long journeys, just like yours. I then went to my regular garage and the guys there replaced it in less than two hours. It cost me around €270 - that was the part plus labor. I hope this helps you and you find a solution!

Hey, thanks for your valuable information. That's a relief that the problem can be fixed without costing a fortune. Yes, a check would certainly be the first sensible step. I really hope the problem can be fixed that way. Thanks again for your help!
