Overheating problems with the 2018 BMW 3 Series petrol engine - possible causes and workshop experience

Greetings, I have a problem with my 2018 petrol BMW 3 Series. It already has 134,560 km on the clock and recently started to overheat. I suspect it could be the cooling air flap system. Do any of you have experience with this? I'd also like to know how you deal with garages, as my last visit to the mechanic was a rather bad experience. Thanks in advance!

Summary of the thread

The main issue discussed is the overheating problem of a 2018 BMW 3 Series petrol engine with a high mileage. The initial suspicion was a faulty cooling air flap system. Another participant shared their similar experience with a BMW 5 Series, where the coolant system was the cause, requiring extensive repairs including the water pump, thermostat, and radiator. The advice given was to seek professional help from a reliable mechanic to diagnose and fix the problem.

Did this summary help you solve your problem?

Hi, I just had a thought. I have a 2015 BMW 5 Series and had the same problem recently. In my case, the overheating was caused by the coolant system and I went straight to the garage. That was heavy stuff man! They really had to deal with the water pump, thermostat and even the radiator. So yeah, it was serious enough. Regarding your question about the garage visit, I was lucky, my mechanic is an old friend of mine, very reliable and thorough. So my experience has been pretty positive, thanks to him! Hope my experience can help you. Take care of yourself and your Bimmer.

Hi, thanks for your reply. It looks like it could really be something serious! Can you perhaps remember how much you had to pay for the repair? And have there been any other problems since your Bimmer was repaired? Thanks again!

Hello, yes, it was definitely no walk in the park. I spent quite a lot on the repair. All in all, the whole scramble to repair the radiator shutter - jamming or stiffness was the problem - cost me about €590. But since I saw the mechanic, the problem with the cooling air flap system has been completely solved - so the money was well invested. Since then, my BMW has been running like clockwork again and the overheating problem has been blown away. Your Bimmer can handle it too, you'll see. Good luck and don't hang your head!

Hello, thank you for the insightful information. It sounds expensive, but if it solves the problem and gets the car running again, then it's definitely worth it. I'm reassured to hear that your BMW is running well again after the repair. I will take your advice and hopefully there will be no further problems after the repair. Thanks again for your help and good advice. See you then!

Hello I get battery sensor, trsmidion wrong what does that mean?

Hi Marcel, it seems like you're getting error messages related to your battery sensor and transmission. The battery sensor error could be due to a faulty sensor, poor connection, or an issue with your car's battery itself. The transmission error could be due to a variety of issues, from low transmission fluid to internal transmission damage. I'd recommend starting with checking your battery condition and connections, and your transmission fluid level and condition. If these checks don't reveal any issues, it would be best to have your car inspected by a professional mechanic, as these issues can be complex and may require specialized tools to diagnose and repair. Please keep us updated on your progress. Do you have any other questions?

Hello everyone, Btr. starter battery: Why is it not possible to program the battery in the BMW F45 activtourer? According to the app, programming is only possible with original BMW batteries. The original BMW type Banner EFB was installed. I bought a Banner EFB (not a BMW) and it cannot be programmed. What Carly promises here is only conditionally applicable. What options are there?
