Palio check engine light power loss
Summary of the thread
A 2001 Fiat Palio is experiencing a check engine light, reduced power, and smoke from the exhaust. The issue is suspected to be related to the crankcase ventilation valve, which can cause a vacuum leak and improper air-fuel mixture, leading to these symptoms. Checking the valve and hoses for cracks is suggested, but a mechanic's inspection is recommended to confirm the problem and prevent engine damage. The defective valve was confirmed as the cause.
Did this summary help you solve your problem?

Thanks! I haven't seen oil leaks, but it's hard to track consumption quickly. How can I confirm the crankcase ventilation valve is the problem?

Without special tools, it's tough to say for sure. You could check the valve and hoses for cracks, but a real test needs a manometer to check crankcase pressure. Given the symptoms, the crankcase ventilation valve is likely. Get a mechanic to check it to avoid engine damage. I suspect the cost could be about 360€.

Thanks, that's helpful! I'll book a mechanic to check the crankcase ventilation system. You were right, the valve was defective.

Sounds like a crankcase ventilation issue. A defective valve can cause a vacuum leak, leading to an improper air-fuel mixture. That would explain the reduced power and the check engine light. The smoke could be caused by oil being drawn into the combustion chamber due to the increased vacuum. Have you noticed any oil leaks or increased oil consumption? The crankcase ventilation system is designed to relieve pressure, so a faulty valve will cause it to malfunction.
