Palio Diesel Gearbox Problems
Summary of the thread
The 2004 Fiat Palio diesel is experiencing gearbox issues, including non-functional paddle shifters, slipping, unclean shifts, grinding noises, and emergency mode activation. The error memory indicates a fault with the transmission control unit (TCU), suggesting it may be defective. After consulting a workshop, the problem was confirmed to be the TCU, which was replaced, resolving the shifting issues.

I did check the error memory. There was a fault registered relating to the transmission control unit. Was it also the TCU that was giving you headaches with your Vectra?

Sorry, missed that. I initially hoped it was just a sensor or something minor, but it turned out the ECU was faulty. I'd take it to a workshop to have them diagnose it properly, it could save you a lot of messing around!

Thanks for sharing your experience! Took your advice and got it checked out at a local shop. Turns out it was indeed the TCU as suspected. Cost me around 1000€ to get it sorted, but at least it's shifting smoothly again now!

Sounds rough! I had similar symptoms with my old Opel Vectra. The shifting problems weren't exactly the same, but the gearbox kept slipping and went into emergency mode all the time. Really annoying, especially on the highway. Did you check the car computer for any error messages?
