Palio NOx Catalyst Aging and Exhaust Leak

Hi, I'm having trouble with my 2011 Fiat Palio, gasoline engine, with 194502 km. The check engine light is on, and the error memory says something about NOx storage catalyst aging. Also, I'm pretty sure there's an exhaust leak somewhere. Could these be related? I've read a bit about air quality and NOx catalysts, but I'm still a novice at car diagnostics and automotive repair.

Summary of the thread

A 2011 Fiat Palio owner experienced a check engine light with an error code indicating NOx storage catalyst aging and suspected an exhaust leak. The error code P0420 suggested catalytic converter efficiency issues, potentially linked to the exhaust leak. The leak could cause the catalyst to degrade faster by affecting the air-fuel mixture. After visiting a workshop, the exhaust manifold leak was fixed, and the damaged NOx catalyst was replaced, resolving the issue.

Did this summary help you solve your problem?

Hey, I also have a Palio (don't remember the year) and had similar symptoms a while back – check engine light and an exhaust leak. What does the error code say exactly? And where do you think the leak is coming from? Mine was a pain to find.

Thanks for the reply! The error code is P0420, which, from what I understand, indicates a problem with the catalytic converter efficiency. As for the exhaust leak, I can't pinpoint the exact location, but it seems to be somewhere near the front of the car. Could this leak cause the NOx catalyst to age prematurely?

P0420, yeah, that's the one I had too. It probably means the cat is not working as well as it should, which can be caused by a leak in the exhaust system. That's probably why your NOx catalyst is aging faster; if the exhaust system is leaking, it could mess with the air-fuel mixture, which would make the catalyst have to work harder and degrade faster. Best take it to a workshop and have them check it out. They can probably find the leak and test the catalyst.

Thanks a lot! I really appreciate the help. I took your advice and brought it to a local workshop, and it turns out there was a leak in the exhaust manifold. They replaced the gasket, which seems to have solved the exhaust leak. They also ran some tests on the NOx catalyst, and unfortunately, it was indeed damaged. Had to get it replaced, costing me 265€. Everything seems to be running smoothly now!
