Palisade exhaust leak rough running

My 2023 Hyundai Palisade with a gasoline engine has a check engine light, rough running, noticeable exhaust leak, and strong exhaust smell. It has 134788 km on it. DEF fluid levels are fine. Could it be the catalytic converter? Has anyone else experienced something similar?

Summary of the thread

A 2023 Hyundai Palisade owner reported issues with a check engine light, rough running, noticeable exhaust leak, and strong exhaust smell. A fellow Palisade owner suggested checking the oxygen sensors, specifically the lambda sensor, as a similar issue had previously caused incorrect readings affecting the fuel/air mixture. Upon inspection by a mechanic, the problem was confirmed to be a defective lambda sensor, which was replaced to resolve the issue.

Did this summary help you solve your problem?

I've got a Palisade too, and your symptoms sound eerily familiar to what I went through a while back. Rough running and that awful exhaust smell... Not fun. Did you check the oxygen sensors? I had a similar issue last year; it turned out to be a faulty lambda sensor. It messed with the whole exhaust treatment system.

Thank you so much for sharing your experience! Could you please elaborate a bit more on the lambda sensor issue? Were there any specific error codes, and did you notice any changes in fuel consumption or performance leading up to the failure?

I remember the frustration well. I didn't note down the exact error codes, sorry. I recall that the garage mentioned something about incorrect readings from the sensor affecting the fuel/air mixture. I would suggest you get it checked at a workshop ASAP. It sounds like your exhaust system is compromised, and you don't want to risk further damage to the catalytic converter or NOx sensors.

Thank you so much for the advice! I took it to a trusted mechanic, and you were spot on! Turns out the lambda sensor was defective. The final bill came to 375€ including parts and labor. I appreciate you sharing your experience; it saved me a lot of time and potential headaches!
