Panamera Diesel Cold Start & Black Smoke, Glow Plug Help

Hey everyone, got some concerns with my '09 Panamera Diesel (134k km). My check engine light's on, and I'm getting black smoke when accelerating. The car's taking forever to start in the cold, and I've got issues with the DPF and pre-glow light. Pretty sure it's glow plug related, but after a bad experience with my previous mechanic, I'm hesitant about where to take it. Has anyone dealt with similar symptoms? Any recommendations for reliable mechanics who really know their way around Porsche diesels? Would really appreciate hearing about your experiences and how much the repairs set you back. Thanks in advance!

Had similar issues with my 2012 Cayenne Diesel a while back. The symptoms matched yours, slow cold starts, black smoke, and warning lights. After troubleshooting, the mechanics found a damaged wiring harness between the glow control unit and ECU. The wires had deteriorated over time, causing inconsistent signals to the glow plugs. Got it fixed at a certified Porsche specialist. The repair involved replacing the entire wiring harness and testing all glow plug connections. It's a serious job that requires specific diagnostic tools and expertise with Porsche diesel systems. The issue can worsen if left unattended and potentially cause more damage to the glow plug system or ECU. Mine was running rough for about a week before I took it in. If you're in this situation, I'd strongly recommend going to a certified Porsche specialist rather than a general mechanic. From my experience, look for a shop that has proper diagnostic equipment for VAG diesel engines and specifically Porsche models.

Hey, thanks for sharing your experience! I'm dealing with something really similar on my Panamera right now. Question, do you remember roughly how much the whole repair cost you? And has everything been running smoothly since then, or have you had any other electrical gremlins pop up? Just trying to get an idea of what I might be looking at cost-wise and if this fix really sorts it out for good.

Hey there! Just wanted to follow up, yeah, I got my Cayenne fixed at the Porsche specialist I mentioned, and it set me back 395€ for the wiring harness repair between the glow control unit and engine control unit. I can tell you it was totally worth every cent though! Since they fixed that malfunctioning glow plug issue, my car's been running like a dream. No more cold start problems, black smoke, or any of those annoying warning lights. It's actually pretty amazing what a difference properly functioning electrics make, my Cayenne starts up instantly now, even on those freezing mornings when it used to struggle. And honestly, looking back, I'm glad I bit the bullet and went to a proper Porsche specialist instead of trying to save a few bucks at a regular shop. These diesel engines are pretty complex beasts, and you really want someone who knows what they're doing. Trust me, once you get it sorted, you'll notice the difference right away. Haven't had a single electrical gremlin pop up since the repair, and it's been smooth sailing all the way!

Thanks so much for all the details! Just got back from the mechanic actually, and what a relief! Took your advice and went to a Porsche specialist, turns out you were spot on about the wiring harness issue. Mine was a bit pricier at 450€ since they had to replace a couple of glow plugs too, but honestly, it was worth every penny. The whole experience was way better than my last mechanic. These guys knew exactly what they were doing, had all the right diagnostic tools, and fixed everything in just one day. Car's running like new now, no more black smoke, starts up instantly even in the cold, and all those warning lights are finally gone! Funny how something like dodgy wiring can cause so many problems, right? Really appreciate you sharing your experience, helped me make the right call on where to take it. If anyone else runs into similar issues with their Porsche diesel, definitely go straight to a specialist. Learned that lesson the hard way, but at least now I've got a reliable mechanic I can trust!
