I'm having a nightmare with my 2008 Fiat Panda diesel. It has done 124799 km. Basically, the car thinks it's always in park! The engine won't start, the check engine light is blazing, and the gearbox feels like it's slipping when I try to move it. I scanned it and it spat out an error code related to the transmission. Could it be the gear linkage?

Sounds like a potential issue with the transmission control unit. Is the shift lock engaging properly? Have you checked the park brake switch?

Shift lock? Park brake switch? Where would I even find those to check them? I'm not very mechanically minded, to be honest.

Okay, given the symptoms and error code, plus the fact that the engine won't start, a defective transmission control unit is a strong possibility. It's beyond a simple fix. You will need a transmission repair.

Thanks for the info. I took it to a workshop, and they confirmed it was the transmission control unit, just like you said. Cost me about 1000€ to get it sorted. Appreciate the help!
