Partner steering vibration spongy handling

I've got a 2006 Peugeot Partner diesel with about 190k km. Recently, the steering has become really weird. The steering wheel vibrates, and the handling feels spongy. The car also stored an error related to the steering. Sometimes it's really hard to turn the wheel, feels like the power steering is failing. Any ideas? Could it be wheel alignment?

I also drive a Peugeot Partner, although a newer model. Your symptoms do sound concerning. Vibrating steering, spongy handling, and increased steering effort definitely point to a problem within the steering system. The error code makes it more specific. OK, thanks. I went to a workshop. Turns out it was a defective cable connection, just like you said! They sorted it out for 95€, which I think is reasonable. Steering is back to normal now!
