Passat Headlight & Windshield Washer System Failure Fix

Is anyone else having trouble with their headlight cleaning system? My washer fluid isnt spraying at all, neither for the windshield nor the headlight cleaning system. This started happening on my 2016 VW Passat Hybrid with 87804km. Already had bad experiences with mechanics so hoping to get some advice before taking it in. Wondering if this is a common issue and what the likely fix would be?

Had the same issue on my 2013 VW Golf Hybrid. The headlight cleaning system completely stopped working, along with the windshield washers. The root cause was a clogged pump system combined with a corroded cable connection. Key findings from my repair: Main washer pump needed removal and cleaning, Xenon headlight cleaning nozzles were blocked with debris, Cable connector to the pump had moisture damage, Relay needed replacement due to corrosion The repair involved removing the washer fluid reservoir, cleaning the entire system, and replacing both the pump connector and relay. Not a major mechanical issue, but requires proper diagnosis since symptoms can point to multiple causes. Worth checking fuses first, locate the washer pump fuse in your fuse box and verify it has not blown. If fuses are good, the pump or its connections are likely the culprit. These systems commonly get clogged or develop electrical issues around the 80-100k km mark. A qualified shop should be able to diagnose and repair this fairly straightforwardly. They will test the pump function and clean or replace components as needed.

Thanks for the detailed response. Had nearly identical symptoms on my VW Passat last winter, complete washer malfunction affecting both headlight cleaning and windshield systems. Got it fixed by cleaning the hose system and replacing a faulty pump. Would you mind sharing roughly how much the repair cost in your case? Also curious if youve had any similar issues pop up since the fix? Its been about 8 months since my repair and everything is working fine so far.

Thanks for asking about the costs. After seeing the mechanic last month, they resolved the headlight cleaning system malfunction completely. The final bill came to 165€ for fixing the cable connection between the pump and relay. The LED fault indicator on the dashboard disappeared right after the repair. No issues have occurred since then, and both the windshield washer and headlight cleaning systems are working perfectly. The xenon headlight cleaning now activates exactly as it should. This seems to be a fairly common fault that develops over time, but once properly fixed, it typically stays resolved. The key was addressing the electrical connection rather than just cleaning out clogs in the system.

Just wanted to close the loop on my washer system issues. Finally took it to a mechanic last week after seeing these responses. Turns out I had multiple problems, a leak in the main hose and a failing pump. The total repair came to 280€, which included a new pump assembly and replacement of the cracked hose section. The mechanic showed me the old pump which was heavily corroded. They also found debris blocking the xenon headlight cleaning nozzles. After a complete system flush and the new parts, everything is working perfectly again. The whole job took about 2 hours. Really glad I asked here first since it helped me understand what to expect. Will definitely keep an eye on the system now to catch any issues early.
