Pathfinder Gear Shift Indicator Problem
Summary of the thread
A 2008 Nissan Pathfinder is experiencing issues with the gear shift indicator display, including difficulty engaging gears, random shifting, rough or slipping gearbox, and grinding noises. The problem may be related to the control unit, but other potential causes include a damaged or misadjusted shift linkage cable and loose connections around the shift knob. Suggested solutions include checking the shift linkage cable and wiring harness for damage or loose connections, though professional inspection may be necessary due to the complexity of the issue and stored error codes.

Thanks! When you say 'shift linkage cable,' do you mean the cable from the shift lever to the transmission? And about 'loose connections around the shift knob,' can you be more specific? Are there particular connectors or modules I should check?

Yep, the cable running to the transmission. Check it for damage or being out of adjustment. For the shift knob, carefully take it off and check the wiring harness and connectors underneath. I'm no mechanic, but I think there are sensors and wiring for the gear selection there. Honestly, though, if you're hearing grinding and seeing error codes, it might be more than a simple fix. I took mine to a shop, and they said it was a faulty control unit. It was about 1000€.

Thanks so much for sharing your experience and the estimate! I'll check those areas, but I think I'll probably be going to a shop too. I appreciate the help!

Hey! Something similar happened with my Pathfinder. I don't remember the exact year, but the symptoms sound spot on. My gear selector was messed up, too, and the display was totally wrong. It felt like the transmission was seizing. Did you check the basics, like the shift linkage cable or any loose connections around the shift knob? That's where I started.
