Pathfinder immobilizer issue

My 2008 Nissan Pathfinder diesel won't start. 124445 km. Sometimes it fires up for a second and then dies. I've got an error code about the immobilizer. I'm guessing the key isn't being recognized properly. Any thoughts?

Summary of the thread

A 2008 Nissan Pathfinder diesel is experiencing starting issues, with the engine firing briefly before dying, accompanied by an immobilizer error code. The problem is suspected to be related to the key not being recognized properly. The issue is likely due to a key programming error or a faulty immobilizer module. The suggested solution is to consult a qualified technician for diagnostic assessment and potential reprogramming, which resolved the issue by reprogramming the key.

I experienced similar issues with my 2012 Opel Astra. The symptoms you describe – engine starting briefly then cutting out, accompanied by immobilizer-related error codes – closely mirror my experience. Was the security light illuminated on your dashboard during these failed start attempts? Also, have you tried using a spare key to rule out a potential issue with the primary key's transponder?

Yeah, the security light is flashing. I did try the spare key, but no luck, same issue. Do you think it's definitely a key programming problem then? I was hoping it wasn't something more serious with the anti-theft system itself.

Given that both keys exhibit the same behavior and the security light is active, the issue most likely resides within the vehicle's immobilizer system or the communication between the key transponder and the immobilizer module. While I cannot definitively diagnose the problem remotely, the probability of a key programming error or a faulty immobilizer module is high. I would strongly advise consulting a qualified technician for a diagnostic assessment and potential reprogramming. In my case, the workshop confirmed the immobilizer was faulty and needed to be reprogrammed.

Thanks for the advice. I took it to a shop, and you were right. The key needed to be reprogrammed, cost me 45€. All sorted now!
